Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Policy and serving as an integral member of the management team, the VP, Safety & Technology Policy will be responsible for managing and overseeing the safety and technology policy portfolio and staff at Auto Innovators. The VP, Safety and Technology Policy will drive the development and implementation of Auto Innovators’ policy positions and priorities on vehicle safety and technology matters, including: crashworthiness and crash avoidance technologies, autonomous vehicles technology, vehicle safety recalls, telecommunications, cybersecurity, privacy, intellectual property and artificial intelligence. This role will also represent Auto Innovators before Federal and State regulatory agencies and help coordinate the industry’s response to Federal and State motor vehicle safety and technology policy initiatives. The goal is to advance the Association’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and member support for the Association.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic plan to advance and broaden awareness of Auto Innovators’ safety and technology policy priorities increase the visibility of key issues across membership baseline.
  • Provide strategic vision and oversee plan and execution of vehicle safety and technology policy matters for Auto Innovators.
  • Create safety and technology policy thought leadership that will allow Auto Innovators to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences and key influencers.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization in the safety and technology policy area. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external opportunities and solutions to advance Auto Innovators’ safety and technology policy priorities; define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Serve as advisor to association leadership and engage in rapid response and crisis management, counsel and guidance at appropriate times.

Communications

  • Serve as primary representative to organization leadership, Executive Committee members, governing members, stakeholders and key reporters on safety and technology policy matters.
  • Serve as a lead contact for the Safety & Technology Policy Committee.
  • Prepare regulatory comments and testimony on safety and technology policy matters.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize issue opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed.
  • Actively engage, cultivate and manage member relationships.

Team Development

  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Recruit and manage a Safety & Technology Policy team to support the development and execution of the safety and technology policy strategy.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Safety and Technology Policy department including budgeting and planning.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 10 years of experience, including experience in a senior management role.
  • Prior experience in a related regulatory agency, advocacy organization, or company is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills and comfort in proactively building and maintaining relationships with, and generating consensus among, members.
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic plan and effectively administering initiatives to advance an organization's mission and goals.
  • Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team.
  • Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical concepts and effectively communicate them to senior leadership, government officials, and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of a high-performing Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Self-reliant and results oriented.
  • Bias for action with a demonstrated track record operating as an effective strategic, as well as tactical, thinker.
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.
  • Excellent and persuasive communicator.
